Comparison between Electrocardiographic and Earlobe Pulse Photoplethysmographic Detection for Evaluating Heart Rate Variability in Healthy Subjects in Short- and Long-Term Recordings

چکیده
Heart rate variability (HRV) is commonly used to assess autonomic functions and responses to environmental stimuli. It is usually derived from electrocardiographic signals; however, in the last few years, photoplethysmography has been successfully used to evaluate beat-to-beat time intervals and to assess changes in the human heart rate under several conditions. The present work describes a simple design of a photoplethysmograph, using a wearable earlobe sensor. Beat-to-beat time intervals were evaluated as the time between subsequent pulses, thus generating a signal representative of heart rate variability, which was compared to RR intervals from classic electrocardiography. Twenty-minute pulse photoplethysmography and ECG recordings were taken simultaneously from 10 healthy individuals. Ten additional subjects were recorded for 24 h. Comparisons were made of raw signals and on time-domain and frequency-domain HRV parameters. There were small differences between the inter-beat intervals evaluated with the two techniques. The current findings suggest that our wearable earlobe pulse photoplethysmograph may be suitable for short and long-term home measuring and monitoring of HRV parameters.

A preliminary attempt to understand compatibility of photoplethysmographic pulse rate variability with electrocardiogramic heart rate variability
In this study, we investigated the difference between heart rate variability (HRV) derived from electrocardiogramic(ECG) signals and pulse rate variability (PRV) derived from photoplethysmographic(PPG) signals. Fourteen healthy subjects conducted the protocol: 10 min physiological signals including distal pulse wave on finger and ear from photoplethysmography (PPG), and heart beat from electroc...
متن کاملThe Performance of Short-Term Heart Rate Variability in the Detection of Congestive Heart Failure
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a cardiac disease associated with the decreasing capacity of the cardiac output. It has been shown that the CHF is the main cause of the cardiac death around the world. Some works proposed to discriminate CHF subjects from healthy subjects using either electrocardiogram (ECG) or heart rate variability (HRV) from long-term recordings. In this work, we propose an...
متن کاملAge-dependent electrocardiographic and echocardiographic changes in German Shepherd dogs
By causing numerous changes in the cardiovascular system, ageing leads to a decreased threshold for clinical manifestation of heart disease. The aim of this study was to define the existence of cardiac structural and functional changes in healthy dogs of different age. Radiographic, electrocardiographic (ECG) and echocardiographic examinations of 20 clinically healthy German Shepherd dogs were ...

Abstract Many studies have been conducted on heart rate variability. Variability in the heart signal of two sequential beats is called heart rate variability (HRV). Short- and long- term variability reflects autonomic nervous system function, so that increased or decreased heart rate variability (HRV) is an indicator of human health. So, the analysis of these changes can predict sudden death...
متن کاملPulse Photoplethysmographic Analysis Estimates the Sympathetic Activity Directed to Heart and Vessels.
BACKGROUND Novel pulse photoplethysmographic-derived indices have been proposed as tools to measure autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation in anesthetized and awake patients, but nowadays their experimental validation is lacking. The authors aimed to investigate the ability of pulse photoplethysmographic amplitude (PPGA), ANS state (ANSS), and ANSS index (ANSSi) to measure changes of ANS mod...
